Technology responsible for our ability to communicate and share ideas, over vast distances, at speeds like never before, is a powerful tool capable of bridging gaps between communities and giving people all across the globe a greater chance for self-determination.

Through a wealth of freely available computer programming resources, chat forums where people can ask questions and exchange experiences, open source programming technologies including blockchain and access to scientific research papers, Nutrient Journal has been able to come to be. There is, at our fingertips, an immense amount of knowledge to be found - we are in the Age of Information.

Nutrient Journal started from the simple desire to eat for nourishment according to evidence from scientific research, rather than according to current diet trends or to achieve a specific body shape. The subsequent discovery that searching every food’s nutrient content and adding them up based on how much one has eaten in a day was a bit time consuming led to the creation of the calculator. Nutrient Journal’s goal is to communicate information that is in scientific literature, not to be an authority of what is right or wrong and ultimately encourage individuals to make their own objective, evidence-based decisions.

However, when the free flow of information, ideas and communication through society is regulated or controlled, finding and judging what is truth and evidence becomes more difficult. A step towards the weaponisation of technology’s incredible influence has been taken and the outcome can include the erosion of trust within society, psychological and political manipulation and the loss of privacy.

False information will always exist, people get things wrong and even scientific papers aren’t the final truth. However, as long as there is a free market of ideas, with open discussion, the truth and the evidence will be able to circulate.

Nutrient Journal strongly values the ability for people to have freedom of speech and to be able to have honest and unregulated communication in both science and everyday life. In support of this, Nutrient Journal offers the daily intake calculator for free and uses open source blockchain technology to store it’s data and to allow for open access.

The more people have access to information and are able to easily create and share ideas, the more individuals can become empowered to make their own informed decisions and implement change that reflects the ideas of the people in society instead of the ideas of those who force their authority over truth and control the flow of knowledge.

To help ensure evidence-based science, free speech and academic freedom should exist and need to be protected.
